Grace Huxford

Dr Grace Huxford is an Associate Professor in Modern History at the University of Bristol, specializing in the social and oral history of post-1945 Britain. Her research focuses on the Cold War (1945-1991), the Korean War (1950-1953), the aftermath of the Second World War, and the social history of warfare in the twentieth century. She is also a co-editor of the journal Cultural and Social History.

Research Interests:
Grace’s work centers on the social history of the Cold War in Britain, with a focus on military families, children, and the long-term psychological, gendered, and cultural impacts of conflict. Her current research explores British military bases in Germany (1945-2000) and their legacies, while her earlier studies examine the Korean War’s societal influence in Britain. She employs life-writing and oral history methodologies extensively.

Advising and Grants:
Grace supervises PhD/MPhil students on topics like Cold War soldier experiences in Berlin, women in the Royal Air Force, tattooing in the British Army, and militarized landscapes in WWII Britain. Her projects have received funding from the British Academy Small Grants Programme (Leverhulme Trust) and AHRC Leadership Fellowship. Past students include Dr Theresa McKeon (2020), Dr Thomas Larkin (2021; Faculty of Arts Doctoral Prize winner), Dr Amy Gower (2022), Dr Steve Westlake (2022), and Dr Gary Willis (2023).
