About
Dr. Martha Lineham is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University's Manchester School of Art, specializing in artist-ethnography methodologies exploring sensory and affective dimensions of place through interdisciplinary practice. As Foundation Fine Art Pathway Lead, she develops curriculum integrating fieldwork, theory, and creative-critical approaches. Her research examines British cultural sites through mixed-method approaches combining lens-based media, soundwalking, object collection, and site-writing.
Research interests focus on sensory affordances of recreational spaces, particularly British seaside arcades and standing stones, analyzed through atmospheric, material, and temporal frameworks. Publications employ experimental ethnography to document understudied cultural practices and challenge reductive perceptions of commercial leisure spaces.
Creative practice includes collaborative exhibitions like 'The Stones Project' investigating ancient/modern monument interactions, and 'Barber Shops of Levenshulme' documenting community spaces. Current projects advance pedagogical research on art school atmospheres and foundational education paradigms.
