Alexandra Makin

Dr. Alexandra Makin is a Research Fellow specializing in early medieval textile archaeology and embroidery. As professionally trained embroiderer (Royal School of Needlework), her research examines historical textiles through material analysis, experimental reconstruction, and sensory methodologies. She holds a PhD in Art and Ethnography from University of Manchester (2016) focusing on British seaside amusement arcades.

Research investigates materiality and social functions of medieval textiles, particularly embroidered vestments like the St Cuthbert maniple (c. 910 CE). Projects include 'The (Amusement) Arcades Project' documenting sensory experiences of British coastal spaces, and collaborative 'Stones Project' exploring ancient monument interactions through art practice.

Consultancy work includes textile analysis for Norwich Castle regeneration and scientific committee membership for Bayeux Tapestry conservation. Public engagement includes Early Medieval Embroidery YouTube channel and digital platforms disseminating textile research.
