David Calvey

Dr David Calvey is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University, holding multiple ongoing roles since 2001 including Year 3 Tutor for Combined Honours, Convenor of the Sociology Teaching Circle, and member of the University Academic Ethics Committee.

His educational qualifications are:

• PhD in Sociology, University of Manchester (1990-1994), funded by ESRC Competition Award
• MSc in Management Science, UMIST (1988-1989), funded by ESRC Committee Award
• BA (Hons) in History & Sociology (2:1), University of Manchester (1984-1987), recipient of Baron Boules University Memorial Prize

Dr Calvey's research spans covert social research, ethnography, and ethnomethodology with investigations into bouncers as gatekeepers of nocturnal city spaces, resistance in corporate call centers and creative businesses, and polemic stand-up comedy. His work extends to extreme lifestyles including combat sports, gangs, recreational drug cultures, and club cultures within the night-time economy framework.
