Associate Professor · Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
École Normale Supérieure de LyonAbout
Dr. Manikandan Mathur is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). He leads the Geophysical Flows Lab, focusing on climate phenomena such as monsoons through laboratory studies, climate modeling, and field measurements. His expertise includes stratified and rotating flows, drone technologies for oceanography, and internal gravity waves. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT (2010) and an M.Sc. from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (2005).
Research Interests: Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Lagrangian Coherent Structures, and internal wave dynamics. Current projects include studying triadic resonance in internal waves at ENS de Lyon with Thierry Dauxois.
His recent work spans ocean-atmosphere interactions, turbulence in stratified fluids, and eddy detection via satellite data. Key collaborations include experiments on wave dissipation mechanisms and nonlinear regimes inaccessible to theory.
Awards: None explicitly listed.
Grants/Advising: Supervises students in experimental fluid dynamics and climate modeling. Notable advisees include Dheeraj Varma and Ramana Patibandla.
Labs: Geophysical Flows Lab at IIT Madras.
