Dr. Lorenza Mondada is Professor of Linguistics at Université Lumière Lyon 2 and Senior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France. She earned her PhD from University of Lausanne (1994) and previously held positions at University of Basel. Her research develops interactional linguistics through conversational analysis and ethnomethodology, examining verbal and non-verbal interactions across diverse contexts including ordinary conversation, professional settings, and plurilingual communication.
Her work investigates how grammar, gestures, artifacts, and spatial arrangements constitute social actions and relationships. Methodologically, she employs ethnographic fieldwork with detailed audio-video documentation and transcription systems capturing multimodal interaction. She has held visiting positions at leading institutions including UC Berkeley, University of Campinas, and Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.
