Mandy Rose

Mandy Rose is Professor of Documentary & Digital Cultures at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE) and the Department of Creative and Cultural Industries. She is an active researcher and Co-Investigator on major projects including the UKRI Strength in Places My World programme and the EPSRC-funded Virtual Realities: Immersive Documentary Encounters.

Her research centers on the evolution of documentary in digital, interactive, and immersive environments. Key interests include the aesthetics, ethics, and epistemology of nonfiction media, audience experience in VR/AR/MR, speculative documentary, and human-more-than-human relationality in storytelling. She brings a practitioner-scholar perspective, having worked extensively in documentary television and public digital storytelling initiatives.

The recent publications and research projects reflect a strong trend in immersive and participatory documentary forms, focusing on ethical design, inclusive storytelling, and the transformative potential of emerging technologies in nonfiction media. Her editorial and scholarly contributions in journals like Studies in Documentary Film, World Records, and Convergence underscore her leadership in the field.

Mandy Rose supervises PhD students in areas related to immersive media, ethical authorship, and climate storytelling. She has led and co-led significant research grants from EPSRC and UKRI, supporting innovation in digital documentary. She was Co-Convenor of the i-Docs Symposium (2014–2020), a major international forum for interactive documentary. Her supervisory roles include both Director of Studies and team membership for diverse projects on AR, VR, and inclusive documentation.

She is associated with research groups focused on Interactive & Immersive Documentary and contributes to collaborative initiatives under Creative Industries research at UWE Bristol. Her work bridges academic research, creative practice, and public engagement, fostering interdisciplinary teams working at the intersection of technology, ethics, and storytelling.
