ML Groot

ML Groot is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Science, Biophotonics and Medical Imaging Department. They hold additional roles in Amsterdam Neuroscience - Brain Imaging and LaserLaB - Biophotonics and Microscopy. Groot earned a PhD in Physics from VU Amsterdam (1997), followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago and a Marie Curie Fellowship at École Polytechnique-ENSTA (France). Their research focuses on developing photonic methodologies for clinical applications, including nonlinear microscopy and instant pathology. Notable projects include the EU-funded IMAGIO initiative (2023–2028) and collaborations with institutions like Amsterdam UMC and Philips Research. Groot leads projects on HHG microscopy for tumor biopsy analysis and skin biomechanics, supported by spinoff Flash Pathology BV.

Research Interests: Medical photonics, nonlinear microscopy, clinical translation, instant pathology, and live tissue imaging. Recent work emphasizes AI-driven diagnostic tools, such as self-supervised image denoising and real-time histology assessment.
