Liz Barnes is a Research Fellow at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre within the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. With a background in biostatistics (BAppSc, MStat), she has been with the Clinical Trials Centre since 2004. Her work primarily focuses on providing statistical expertise for clinical trials across multiple medical domains.
Dr. Barnes specializes in biostatistics for clinical trials, with particular expertise in oncology (especially brain cancer and uterine tumors) and cardiovascular medicine. Her research spans neuro-oncology, pediatric clinical trials, cancer therapeutics, and methodological approaches to clinical trial design. She has contributed to numerous high-impact studies across diverse medical fields, demonstrating versatility in statistical methodology application.
Her recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a strong focus on neuro-oncology trials, pediatric health outcomes, cancer treatment protocols, and methodological innovations in clinical research. Dr. Barnes serves as the statistician for the COGNO brain cancer group and the ANZGOG Uterine Tumour group, and is involved with major trials including Outback, ECHO, and Tips. She provides statistical consultation to researchers at Kids Research in the Sydney Children's Hospital Network and serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee to the SCHN HREC and NSW Health Paediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials HREC.
She coordinates units in the Master of Biostatistics program of the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia and the Master of Clinical Trials Research at the University of Sydney, contributing significantly to the education of future clinical researchers and biostatisticians.
