Lee Mayfield

Lee Mayfield serves as Assistant Director of the School of Communication Studies, New Student Advisor, and Senior Lecturer at James Madison University. He holds a B.F.A. in Theater from the University of Mississippi and an M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Alabama.

His academic focus includes advising Communication Studies majors and teaching courses such as Presentational Speaking, Business and Professional Speaking, and a special topics course in event planning. For 28 years, he coached JMU’s nationally ranked individual events team, achieving top 20 national rankings for three consecutive years. His research and teaching emphasize communication skills development and interdisciplinary learning.

Outside academia, Mayfield enjoys biking, reading, and exploring Virginia’s wine regions. He values JMU’s undergraduate program diversity and collaborative faculty environment.

• Directed JMU’s speech team for 28 years, fostering national recognition
• Advisees include Communication Studies majors
