Laura G. Gutiérrez

Laura G. Gutiérrez serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies within the College of Liberal Arts and Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Public Practice in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and maintains an active research and teaching profile across interdisciplinary humanities fields.

Her research centers on Latinx performance studies, Mexican and Latinx visual cultural studies, queer theory, gender studies, transnational studies, and feminisms. Gutiérrez examines intersections of identity, politics, and aesthetics through analyses of border art, Mexican video art, political cabaret, and contemporary queer Latinx performance. Her work critically engages with decolonial frameworks and embodied cultural practices across transnational contexts.

Dr. Gutiérrez has received significant recognition including:

She actively mentors students through courses like Queer Latinx Aesthetics and Latina Performance: Celia-Selena while securing research support through competitive fellowships. Gutiérrez extends her scholarly impact as co-Artistic Director of Austin’s OUTsider Festival, bridging academic work with community-based arts programming and public engagement initiatives.
