About
Kristy L. Weber, MD is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship-trained orthopaedic oncologist. She directs a multidisciplinary musculoskeletal tumor service that cares for patients of all ages with benign and malignant bone/soft-tissue tumors and metastatic bone disease, while simultaneously running an NIH-funded research laboratory focused on breast and renal cancer bone metastasis.
Education & Training:
- B.S. Animal Science (Summa cum Laude), University of Missouri – Columbia, 1987
- M.D., Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, 1991
- Resident, Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, 1991-1996
- Research & Clinical Fellow, Orthopaedic Oncology, Mayo Clinic, 1996-1998
- Board Certified, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (2000, recertified 2008)
Clinical & Research Interests: Dr. Weber specializes in complex limb-salvage surgery of the pelvis, hip, knee and shoulder using metallic prostheses, structural allografts, vascularized fibular grafts and biologic reconstructions in skeletally immature patients. Her laboratory develops murine models of breast and kidney cancer bone metastasis, identifies molecular targets driving osteolytic lesions and lung metastasis, and tests novel drug therapies to block bone destruction and systemic spread.
Recent Publication Trends: From 2013-2014 her scholarly output spans translational oncology (breast cancer transcriptional regulation, ENPP1-mediated metastasis), advanced imaging for sarcoma recurrence, geriatric falls assessment, evidence-based guideline methodology, and orthopaedic oncology education—underscoring a dual commitment to basic science discovery and clinical quality improvement.
Editorial & Leadership Roles: She has served as section editor for the AAOS Orthopaedic Knowledge Update 11 and Comprehensive Orthopaedic Review, and authored chapters on metastatic bone disease in the ASBMR primer and on healthcare guidelines in Orthopaedic Basic Science.
Multidisciplinary Care: Dr. Weber leads a tumor board that integrates surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical/pediatric oncologists to deliver coordinated care, and she performs image-guided needle biopsies for accurate histologic diagnosis of musculoskeletal lesions.
