Kelly Scarff is a Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she also serves as Director of the Technical Communication Program. She holds a PhD in Rhetoric and Writing (Virginia Tech, 2021), an MFA in Creative Writing (Chatham University, 2010), a BA in English (University of Pittsburgh, 2008), and an AA in Graphic Design (Westmoreland County Community College, 1999). Her research focuses on rhetoric and writing studies, professional and technical communication, environmental communication, and public discourse.
Scarff’s work bridges engineering education and communication practices, emphasizing technical writing in STEM fields. Her recent studies investigate embedded communication skills in engineering curricula and environmental justice in public participation processes.
