Keith Johnson

Keith Johnson is a Lecturer of Music at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), where he directs the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra. He also serves as Director of Bands at El Cerrito High School. With over two decades of experience, he specializes in music education across middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. His academic background includes a BA and MA in Music Education from San José State University.

• Bachelor of Arts in Music, San José State University
• Master of Arts in Music Education (Wind Conducting emphasis), San José State University

Research/Performance Focus: Keith’s career centers on ensemble direction and jazz education. His ensembles have performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and international jazz festivals (e.g., Jazz à Vienne, Monterey). He has led El Cerrito High School ensembles to featured performances at CASMEC (2014, 2018, 2024) and the 2024 Midwest Clinic.

Awards:

• Recipient of multiple teaching honors, including national Downbeat Magazine awards for the Jazzschool Studio Band (2011)
• Recognized as a leader in Bay Area music education

Leadership & Service: Served on boards of CMEA, CAJ, and as Past President of CMEA Bay Section. Active as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor in Northern California.
