Keara Goin

Keara Goin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia. She serves as Director of the Undergraduate Program and teaches courses including History of Media, Mexican Cinema, and Stars, Celebrity, and Fame.

Education:

• PhD in Radio-Television-Film from University of Texas at Austin
• MA in Anthropology from University of South Carolina

Research Focus:

• Media's role in identity negotiation among Afro-Latina/os
• Media-based racialization of Afro-Latina/os
• Performativity of race and gender intersections
• Ethnographic study of Dominican identity through fieldwork in the Dominican Republic and New York City

Projects: Currently working on her first book project, Mediated Dominicanidad (Indiana U Press), with recent publications in Latino Studies and Celebrity Studies.
