Kate Knutson

Kate Knutson is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Gustavus Adolphus College, where she has taught since 2005. She holds a PhD from the University of Washington and a BA from Linfield College. Her teaching and research focus on American politics, with specializations in religion and politics, interest groups, public policy, and gender and politics.

Kate Knutson is deeply committed to undergraduate education and mentorship. She has co-authored research with students, guided them through law school applications, and involved them in national conference presentations. She has also led January Term study trips to Washington, D.C. and Hawaii, integrating experiential learning into her curriculum. Her textbook on public policy includes contributions from former students now working in government and politics. She has served in key administrative roles, including Director of the First-Term Seminar program (2012–2018) and Interim Director of the Academic Support Center (2017), and chaired the Faculty Task Force that redesigned the college’s curriculum.

Knutson is actively involved in campus life and student engagement. She organizes the annual Day at the Capitol, where students meet legislators and advocate for education funding.
