Katarina Gerometta

Katarina Gerometta is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities, Juraj Dobrila University of Pula. She holds a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Zagreb (2017) and has extensive experience in archaeological excavations across Croatia, Italy, Serbia, France, and other regions. Her research focuses on environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology, and paleoecology, with a strong emphasis on cave studies, prehistoric landscapes, and human-environment interactions.

Education:

• Bachelor's and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Zagreb.

Research Interests: Gerometta specializes in interdisciplinary approaches to prehistoric and paleoenvironmental studies, including geoarchaeological analyses of cave sediments, climate change impacts, and hunter-gatherer adaptations. She has led and contributed to projects such as RoLand (Roman Landscape Dynamics), MOPRENS (Modelling Prehistoric Networks), and ArchaeoCulTour (Cultural Tourism in Vrsar). Her work often integrates micromorphology, lithic analysis, and geophysical methods to reconstruct past environments and human activities.

Publications: Her recent work explores cave use in Croatia, Neanderthal behavior in the Danube Gorges, and geoarchaeological analyses of sites like Škarin Samograd and Mujina Pećina. Key themes include pastoralism, cave microstratigraphy, and prehistoric technological innovations.

Grants & Projects: Active in collaborative research since 2010, including roles in projects investigating the Lim Channel, Istrian Roman land division, and Adriatic prehistoric networks. She has also contributed to international excavations and conferences.

Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Landscape Archaeology (CIRLA) and collaborates with institutions like the Archaeological Museum of Istria and the University of Cambridge. Her fieldwork includes leading excavations and employing advanced geophysical techniques such as LIDAR and earth resistance tomography.
