About
Justin Phillip Reed is a Professor of Practice and Writer-in-Residence at Clemson University's Department of English, College of Arts and Humanities. His work bridges creative writing, contemporary poetry, horror cinema, and critical explorations of race, gender, and queerness.
- MFA, Washington University in St. Louis (2015)
- BA, Tusculum University (2013)
Reed’s research and creative practice focus on the intersection of horror cinema, the grotesque, and ideological critique, particularly through the lens of African-American identity and queer theory. His hybrid collection With Bloom Upon Them and Also With Blood (2023) and poetry volumes The Malevolent Volume (2020) and Indecency (2018) exemplify these themes. His publications frequently interrogate the grotesque as a tool for dismantling oppressive systems.
Reed’s scholarly and creative output has garnered significant recognition, including the 2021 CLMP Firecracker Award, the 2018 National Book Award in Poetry, and multiple Lambda Literary Award wins and nominations. His prose and poetry have appeared in The Poetry Foundation, The Kenyon Review Online, and The Adroit Journal, among others.
