Justin J. Mertz is an Associate Professor of Music and Associate Director of Bands at the University of Northern Iowa. He directs the Panther Marching Band, conducts the Symphonic Band, and teaches courses in music education. Prior to joining UNI, he served as Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Syracuse University, where he co-conducted the Wind Ensemble and led the Symphony Band and Concert Band. Mertz has also held teaching positions in Texas and New York school districts.

His professional work includes directing marching bands for high-profile events such as postseason bowl games, NFL/CFL games, the Heisman Trophy Gala, and Super Bowl XLVIII. He also writes drill for competitive high school marching bands in the Northeast and Midwest. Mertz is actively involved as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator across the United States.
