Julia Welland

Julia Welland is an Associate Professor of War Studies and Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS) at the University of Warwick's Faculty of Social Sciences, within the Politics and International Studies (PAIS) department. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and previously served as a Teaching Fellow before her current role. Welland leads the Politics and Sociology and EPAIS programs as Course Director.

Her research focuses on gender, race, war, and militarism, with a particular emphasis on feminist security studies and feminist political economy. She completed a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2016–2020), examining contemporary militarism through events like the Invictus Games and Ms Veteran America contest. This project explores how militarism persists despite its harms, using gender, race, disability, and political economy frameworks.

Welland teaches the PO3A7 module, 'Gender, Race and Militarism,' and supervises PhD students in feminist global politics and Critical Military Studies. Her publications span journals like International Feminist Journal of Politics and Review of International Studies, with a forthcoming book from Edinburgh University Press. She also co-edited the Handbook on Gender and War (2016) and contributes to Critical Military Studies as an Associate Editor.

Awards include the Leverhulme Fellowship. Her work bridges theory and activism, addressing themes like militarized violence, social reproduction, and affective politics in global conflict contexts.
