Dr. Joanna Butler is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Work, Employment and Organisation within the Strathclyde Business School. She leads Scotland’s only British Psychology Society and CIPD-accredited MSc Occupational Psychology program and coordinates the Strategic Leadership Development MBA module. Her roles include teaching across postgraduate programs such as MSc Human Resource Management and MSc International Management.
Dr. Butler holds a PhD in Work, Employment and Organisation (2020) from Strathclyde, alongside MSc and BA qualifications in Psychology. She is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist with Associate Fellow status from the British Psychological Society (BPS), specializing in assessment and organizational development.
Her research focuses on employability strategies for disadvantaged groups, welfare program evaluation, and inclusive recruitment. Key areas include social impact in Saudi Arabia, skills mismatch in Glasgow’s workforce, and disability employment initiatives. She commercialized an online employability tool, becoming the first Strathclyde Business School academic to complete a spin-out venture.
Dr. Butler’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly social inclusion and reducing inequalities. Recent projects include the ESRC-funded ‘Opportunities and Challenges for Transforming Employability in Scotland’ (2023–2028) and the Blue Triangle Recovery Service Evaluation (2025–2026). Her awards include the 2023 Stephen Young Entrepreneurship Award and the KE Excellence Awards’ ‘Innovator with Future Impact’ title.
