Javier Kypuros is the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He oversees a two-campus engineering program spanning Tyler and Houston, with a partnership with Houston Community College (HCC). Previously, he served as Associate Dean at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and held roles at Hispanic Serving Institutions like the University of Texas at El Paso and UT-Pan American. Dr. Kypuros holds a B.S. from Princeton University (1996) and M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (1998, 2001).
His research focuses on system dynamics and control, bond graph modeling, and engineering education innovations. He has authored over 50 technical papers and a textbook on bond graph modeling. Notably, he received the UT System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award (2014) for his pedagogical contributions. His work includes developing interventions to improve student success in engineering gatekeeper courses, thermal modeling of railroad bearings, and collaborative educational initiatives targeting underrepresented student populations.
Professional development includes the ABET Fundamentals of Program Assessment Workshop (2015) and the UT System Leadership Institute LEAP program (2011). His leadership emphasizes cross-institutional partnerships, curriculum modernization, and addressing educational equity in STEM fields.
