Jason R.C. Nurse

Dr. Jason R.C. Nurse is a Reader in Cyber Security at the University of Kent's School of Computing and serves as Public Engagement Lead at the Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS). He also holds multiple prestigious affiliations including Visiting Academic at the University of Oxford, Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), and Visiting Fellow in Defence and Security at Cranfield University.

His educational background includes a PhD in cyber security for organizations from the University of Warwick, an MSc (Distinction) from the University of Hull, and a BSc (First Class) from the University of the West Indies. Nurse also serves as Chair of the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS) Advisory Board and is a Professional Member of the British Computer Society.

Dr. Nurse's research focuses on the interdisciplinary aspects of security, privacy, and trust, examining how human individuals interact with technologies across the full spectrum of modern digital systems. His work spans security and privacy in IoT and social media, usable security, security awareness programs, technical and psychological aspects of cybercrime (including insider threats, phishing, and ransomware), identity security risks, fake news detection, and corporate security challenges posed by emerging technologies. His approach uniquely combines technical cybersecurity knowledge with psychological and sociological perspectives.

His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on ransomware impacts, cyber insurance mechanisms, and security challenges facing small and medium enterprises. Nurse's work consistently demonstrates how cybersecurity intersects with human behavior, organizational structures, and societal impacts, reflecting his commitment to addressing cyber threats through both technical and social lenses.

Among his notable recognitions, Dr. Nurse was nominated as a Rising Star within the UK's EPSRC RISE Awards Campaign for his interdisciplinary cybersecurity research. As an academic supervisor, Nurse guides PhD students researching smart home security practices, ransomware victim experiences, and organizational learning from cyber incidents. Dr. Nurse is an active member of the Cyber Security Group at Kent and contributes to the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS).
