About
Jan Willem Alffenaar is a Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the Microbes in Health and Disease department (MHD). His research focuses on optimizing antimicrobial therapy through pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), particularly for antifungal agents and anti-TB drugs. He explores therapeutic drug monitoring, PK modeling, and alternative sampling strategies (e.g., dried blood spots, oral fluid) to balance treatment efficacy and toxicity.
Key research interests include:
- Pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial agents in critically ill patients
- Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment optimization
- Impact of diabetes mellitus on TB drug metabolism
- Voriconazole pharmacogenomics and inflammation interactions
Recent work highlights include a randomized pilot trial of azithromycin as host-directed therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis and a decade-long international quality control program for anti-TB drug measurements. He has supervised 25 research projects and contributed to over 339 publications.
