Professor Jan-Willem Alffenaar is Chair of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Sydney and affiliated with Westmead Hospital and the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (Sydney ID). He leads research in tuberculosis (TB) treatment optimization, antimicrobial pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic drug monitoring. His work spans clinical trials, translational research, and global health collaborations in TB-endemic regions like Indonesia, China, and Tanzania.
Research focuses include host-directed therapies, drug exposure thresholds, and implementation strategies for TDM in resource-limited settings. He has supervised 14 completed and 12 ongoing PhD students. Awards include the 2015 IATDMCT Victor Armstrong Young Investigator Award.
