James M. Scott is the SHSS Scholar in Residence at The Citadel's Department of History. He holds a Master of Arts in Military History from The Citadel, a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism from Harvard University (2006-2007), a Bachelor of Arts in English & Spanish from Wofford College, and is currently completing a Ph.D. in War Studies at King’s College London.
His research focuses on modern military history, particularly strategic decision-making, conflict dynamics, and the human dimension of warfare. Notable works include Black Snow (2022), Rampage (2018 Pulitzer Prize finalist), and Target Tokyo (2015 Pulitzer finalist).
His upcoming book Targeted (2024) co-authored with Jack Carr examines the 1983 Hezbollah attack in Beirut. Scott’s works have been recognized with prestigious awards and have influenced scholarly and public discourse on military history.
As Scholar in Residence, Scott leverages The Citadel’s resources to advance research while engaging with the academic community. His contributions enrich cadet education through interdisciplinary insights into historical conflicts and leadership.
