Irene Peirano Garrison

Irene Peirano Garrison is the Pope Professor of Latin Language and Literature at Harvard University's Department of Classics, serving as Director of Graduate Studies. She holds a B.A. from Oriel College, Oxford (2002) and a Ph.D. from Harvard (2007). Previously, she taught at Yale University (2007–2020). Her research explores Roman poetry's intersection with rhetoric, literary criticism, and pedagogy, with a focus on authorship, authenticity, and ancient reception studies.

Her major works include The Rhetoric of the Roman Fake (2012) and Persuasion, Rhetoric and Roman Poetry (2019), analyzing imperial Latin literature's rhetorical dimensions. Current projects address classical pedagogy's historical entanglements with identity politics and a forthcoming monograph on The Latin Playbook (Cambridge UP).

Prof. Garrison co-edits Transactions of the American Philological Association (TAPA) and serves as Latin Literature editor for the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Teaching spans Latin poetry, ancient rhetoric, and classical scholarship's history. She actively advocates equity, gender, and inclusion in academia.
