Ira Iscoe was the Ashbel Smith Professor of Psychology Emeritus at The University of Texas, Austin. He held leadership positions including Director of Counseling and Psychological Services Center (1968–1978), Director of the Institute of Human Development and Family Studies (1978–1994), and Director of the Plan II Interdisciplinary Honors Program (1981–1986). He earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UCLA in 1951 and joined UT as an Assistant Professor, advancing to Full Professor.
His research focused on community psychology, mental health prevention, multicultural collaboration, and underserved populations. He pioneered the Community Psychology Program at UT and advocated for community-level interventions. Key contributions include founding interdisciplinary programs and fostering ties between UT and the National University of Mexico.
Dr. Iscoe received the College of Liberal Arts' highest honor (Pro Bene Meritis Award), National Institute of Mental Health's Distinguished Visiting Scientist Award, and Texas Psychological Association's top award. Colleagues praised his legacy in shaping psychology education, civil rights advocacy, and fostering collaborative environments.
