Prof. Ingeborg Brouwer is a Full Professor of Nutrition for Healthy Living at the Department of Health Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and currently serves as Head of the Department of Health Sciences. She holds additional roles at the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and APH - Health Behaviors & Chronic Diseases. Since 2006, she has held a tenured position and specializes in nutrition’s impact on health and sustainability.
Education: Trained as a nutritionist at Wageningen University and registered as a nutritional scientist. She earned her PhD in Medical Sciences from Catholic University Nijmegen (1999), focusing on folate and folic acid effects on homocysteine. Post-PhD roles included post-doc and project leader at the Wageningen Centre for Food Sciences.
Research Interests: Her work spans nutrition’s role in health and sustainability, including dietary patterns, vitamin D, and public health nutrition. Recent studies include protein intake in aging, genomics of depression, and cardiovascular risk mitigation through nutrition.
Awards: Recipient of the 2024 ‘Dream Green’ societal grant for sustainable healthy futures in Amsterdam.
Advising & Grants: Supervised 12 PhD theses and leads projects like ‘integrated urban FOOD policies’ (2022–2027) and the EU-funded MooDFOOD initiative (2014–2019). Member of the Talma Institute Board and APH’s HBCD Program Committee.
Labs/Teams: Active at the Amsterdam Public Health research institute and coordinates interdisciplinary projects on food systems and sustainability.
