Ian McGuire

Ian McGuire is Professor of American Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester, where he co-founded the Centre for New Writing in 2007 and served as Co-Director until 2017. His research focuses on contemporary fiction and historical narratives, with acclaimed novels exploring themes of morality, survival, and human conflict.

Research interests include:

• Innovations in historical fiction
• American literary realism
• Creative writing pedagogy

His novel The North Water won the Royal Society of Literature’s Encore Award and was adapted into a BBC television series. McGuire supervises PhD students in creative writing and American literature.
