Dr Monique Roffey is a Professor of Contemporary Fiction at Manchester Metropolitan University, specialising in Creative Writing. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, her work intertwines Caribbean heritage, magical realism, and explorations of female sexuality. She holds an MA and PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University. Her research focuses on outsiders, otherness, and historical legacies, particularly in postcolonial contexts.
Her acclaimed novels include The Mermaid of Black Conch (Costa Book of the Year 2020) and Archipelago, which won the OCM Bocas Prize. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and co-founder of Writers Rebel. Teaching emphasizes craft mastery through workshops, fostering emerging writers in a supportive environment.
Her awards reflect her impact on Caribbean literature and feminist narratives. Current projects include Passiontide, a bold exploration of gender violence and activism. She advocates environmental and social justice, bridging academia and creative practice.
