Ian Bousfield is a renowned brass soloist, conductor, and pedagogue. He currently holds the position of Professor of Trombone at the Hochschule der Künste Bern and the Royal Academy of Music. Previously, he served as Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras. His conducting engagements include leading the Oslo Philharmonic, Danish Radio Symphony, and New World Symphony. Bousfield is a sought-after educator, with former students securing positions in top orchestras and winning prestigious competitions like the ARD and Royal Overseas League.
His research and pedagogical focus centers on brass performance techniques, trombone pedagogy, and orchestral conducting. He is the author of Unlocking the Trombone Code, a widely acclaimed book and video series. Bousfield also serves as a brass coach for the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and New World Symphony.
Awards include the ITA Award (2012), a lifetime honor from the International Trombone Association. He has been actively involved in competitions, such as chairing the inaugural Tchaikovsky Competition for Brass in 2019.
