Hoi-eun Kim is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on social and cultural history of modern Europe and East Asia, particularly examining transnational exchanges between Germany, Japan, and Korea in the 19th and 20th centuries. He explores medical professionals as agents shaping knowledge and empire-building in these regions.
Kim holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2006). His work has been supported by grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Academy of Korean Studies, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He is currently writing a book on Japanese doctors in colonial Korea (1910–1945), funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
His research interests include the history of medicine, pharmaceuticals, and imperial connections between Germany and Japan, alongside broader themes of colonialism, race, and migration. His first book, Doctors of Empire: Medical and Cultural Encounters between Imperial Germany and Meiji Japan (2014), analyzed the German influence on medical education in Meiji-era Japan.
