Gerda Kits

Dr. Gerda Kits is an Associate Professor of Economics at The King's University, focusing on decolonizing economic education and addressing environmental and social justice issues. Her research spans the economic impacts of Alberta's oilsands, settler-colonialism's legacy, and integrating faith-based principles into pedagogy. She holds a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics (University of Alberta, 2011), an MDE from Dalhousie University (2006), and a BA in Environmental Studies from The King's University (2004).

Dr. Kits emphasizes active learning and pluralism in teaching, engaging students with real-world challenges in economics, environmental studies, and commerce programs. Her work challenges conventional economic frameworks through a decolonial lens, advocating for reconciliation and ecological stewardship. She has contributed to reports on energy projects like Teck's oilsands mine and presented at conferences on topics such as curriculum reform and indigenous knowledge systems.

Volunteer activities include roles with organizations like Keepers of the Athabasca and Kairos, aligning with her commitment to justice and environmental advocacy. Outside academia, she enjoys outdoor activities like gardening and hiking.
