Gayatri Jape is a Clinical Associate Professor at the UWA Medical School's Department of Paediatrics and a Consultant Neonatal Pediatrician with over 20 years of experience in Australia and internationally. She holds a PhD in Neonatal Nutrition and Probiotics from the University of Western Australia (2022), an MD from the University of Mumbai (2007), and a MBBS (1996–2002). Her research focuses on probiotics in preterm infants, gut microbiome development, and staff well-being in neonatal care. She leads the Neonatal Follow-up Program at King Edward Memorial Hospital and chairs the Long-term Outcomes Subcommittee of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Her work spans clinical leadership, mentoring UWA medical students, and overseeing clinical rotations at KEMH. She has authored 32 research outputs, including randomized controlled trials on probiotic efficacy and systematic reviews on neonatal microbiota. Awards include the 2023 ISWA Personal Excellence Award. Grants include leadership on probiotic supplementation trials funded by the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and Perth Children’s Hospital.
Her research addresses preterm infant neurodevelopment, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and maternal gestational diabetes impacts. She collaborates with institutions like the Telethon Kids Institute and contributes to clinical trials subcommittees in WA Health.
