Dr. Toby Yanowitz is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research at UPMC Children's Hospital and Magee Women's Hospital. She holds an M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1991) and an M.S. in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh (2008). Her clinical expertise includes neonatal neurocritical care and perinatal epidemiology.
Her research focuses on:
- Neurologic outcomes in preterm/term infants
- Necrotizing enterocolitis prevention
- Hemodynamic disturbances in neonatal brain injury
Dr. Yanowitz directs neonatal databases for the Vermont Oxford Network and Children’s Hospitals Consortium. She has served as site-PI for landmark trials including the Cool Cap trial (therapeutic hypothermia for HIE) and HEAL study. She mentors trainees in clinical research on neonatal brain development and transitional hemodynamics.
Honors include the Perinatal Research Society NIH Young Investigator Award and teaching awards for neonatal fellowship mentoring. Recent publications (2019-2024) center on cord management strategies, neuroprotective therapies, and surgical outcomes in NEC.
