About
Professor Gary Bryant is the Head of Department and Associate Dean of Physics at RMIT University's School of Science in Melbourne, Australia. He has held this position since September 2019 and has been a Professor at RMIT since January 2010. Prior to this, he served as Director of the RMIT Centre for Molecular & Nanoscale Physics (2012–2019) and Associate Dean (HDR) (2011–2019). His academic journey includes roles as Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Lecturer at RMIT, alongside visiting research positions at institutions such as the University of Edinburgh (UK), École Normale Supérieure (France), and RWTH Aachen University (Germany) through an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship.
Dr. Bryant's research focuses on applying light, neutron, and X-ray scattering techniques to biological physics and soft matter systems. Key interests include cryobiology, desiccation mechanisms, colloidal suspensions, and particle dynamics. His work bridges fundamental physics with applications in extreme environments, such as understanding cryopreservation and cellular interactions.
He holds a PhD in Physics and Astronomy from the University of New South Wales (1991) and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in the same field (1985). His extensive international collaborations span the US, Germany, France, and the UK. Current research projects under his supervision explore topics like cryopreservation optimization, nanoparticle interactions with cell membranes, and lunar/martian mineral characterization via neutron/X-ray analysis.
