About
Dr. Gabriel Pontes is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC) and the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Sciences (ACEAS) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His research focuses on the oceans' role in the climate system, particularly how ice sheets, carbon dioxide, and solar radiation influenced past ocean dynamics and their implications for future climate projections.
- Research Interests: Oceanic and atmospheric teleconnections between tropical and polar regions, High Latitude Southern Hemisphere Climate, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and tropical rainfall dynamics.
Scientific Contributions: His recent work examines nonlinear ENSO sensitivity across climate states, AMOC weakening due to subarctic freshening, and paleoclimate constraints on future climate projections. His publications span journals like Nature Geoscience, Climate of the Past, and Scientific Reports.
- Key Awards: Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Sciences Post-doctoral Fellowship (2022), FAPESP Post-doctoral Fellowship (2022), and FAPESP PhD Scholarships (2016-2021).
