Fidelis Masao

Dr. Fidelis Masao is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He holds affiliations with the East African Rock Art Research Association (EARARA) and National Geographic expeditions alongside Louise Leakey. His career includes roles as Visiting Professor at Rutgers University, Associate Professor at the Open University of Tanzania, and Director of Tanzania's National Museums.

Dr. Masao's research focuses on palaeoanthropology, African Archaeology, rock art interpretation, and museology. His work bridges field research with institutional curation through positions at Arusha National History Museum and leadership in palaeocultural/environmental research initiatives.

He received a PhD from the Department of Archaeology in 1977 under Roy Carlson's supervision, marking a milestone as Tanzania's first archaeology PhD recipient. His 2020 award recognizes transformative contributions to understanding human evolution through material culture analysis.

Professional leadership includes coordinating international expeditions and developing museum frameworks that contextualize East Africa's archaeological heritage. Current research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches linking rock art studies with evolutionary biology.
