About
Ernesto Guzman is a Professor and Director of the Honey Bee Research Centre at the University of Guelph, holding the Pinchin Family Chair in Honey Bee Health. He earned a DVM from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (1982), followed by an MS (1989) and PhD (1992) in Entomology from the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on honey bee genetics, behavior, and diseases, particularly resistance to Varroa mites and Nosema pathogens. He has authored/co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and is recognized globally for his contributions to apiculture and pollinator health.
Research interests include the genetic basis of disease resistance, effects of pesticides (e.g., neonicotinoids), and breeding programs for Varroa-resistant bees. Current projects explore prebiotics/probiotics for Nosema control, neonicotinoid impacts on bee health, and varroa-resistant bee selection. Awards include APIMONDIA Gold Medals (1989, 1999), the James I. Hambleton Award (2015), and the Pinchin Family Chair (2016).
The Honey Bee Research Centre conducts interdisciplinary studies on colony health, pathogen epidemiology, and sustainable beekeeping practices. Collaborative projects address prebiotic/probiotic efficacy, pesticide toxicity, and varroa mite population dynamics. Dr. Guzman advises/co-advises over 60 students and actively engages in outreach to advance bee health solutions.
