Erica Buurman is an Associate Professor and Director of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San José State University’s School of Music and Dance. Her research focuses on Beethoven’s compositional processes, sketch studies, Viennese musical culture, and social dance.
- PhD in Music History from the University of Manchester (2013), specializing in Beethoven’s instrumental works and sketchbook outlines.
- Previously taught at Canterbury Christ Church University (2013–2019) before joining SJSU in 2019.
- Contributed chapters to The Cambridge Companion to the Eroica Symphony (Cambridge, 2020) and The New Beethoven (University of Rochester Press, 2020).
- Editor of The Beethoven Journal and The Beethoven Newsletter, and featured on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 for Beethoven-related broadcasts.
Her Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship (2017–2018) supported a monograph on social dancing in Beethoven’s Vienna (in press). She leads the Center for Beethoven Studies, a hub for research, education, and public engagement with Beethoven’s legacy.
