Emma Kemp

Emma Kemp is a British nonfiction writer and media researcher based in Los Angeles, currently serving as a full-time Assistant Professor at Otis College of Art & Design. She is also the co-founder of Concerning Landscape, a non-profit research organization, and represented by Frances Goldin Literary Agency for her forthcoming cultural criticism work.

Her educational background includes a BFA from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, and an MFA in Writing & Critical Studies from California Institute of the Arts.

Kemp's research in Environmental Media Studies critically examines relationships between environment, sub/culture, and media through anti-colonial and more-than-human frameworks. Her interdisciplinary practice leverages emerging technologies for ecological and cultural conservation, with strong emphasis on narrative documentary forms and critical analysis of millennial media landscapes.

Kemp leads Concerning Landscape's initiatives including No Canyon Hills (NCH)—a multiform entity working in solidarity with plant and animal communities of the Verdugo Mountains on ancestral Fernandeño Tataviam and Gabrieleno (Tongva) lands—and Studio Bakersfield, a reparative earthwork and eco-media design studio co-led with Mateo Altman. Her current major project is the authorized biography "At The Bottom of Everything" examining Conor Oberst's artistic relationship with millennial media culture, scheduled for publication by Grand Central (US) and Penguin (UK/Commonwealth) in 2026-2027.
