About
Dr. Edwin Veldhuizen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He works within the Division of Infectious Diseases & Immunology, specifically focusing on Molecular Host Defence. His office is located in the Androclus Building at Yalelaan 1, Room W406, Utrecht.
His research centers on antimicrobial peptides, host defense mechanisms, and innate immunity in veterinary contexts, with particular emphasis on avian and porcine systems. Veldhuizen's expertise includes protein chemistry and antimicrobial assays, with notable work on chicken cathelicidins, host defense peptides, and essential oils as potential antibiotic alternatives.
Veldhuizen has published extensively in his field, with 117 research outputs documented. His recent work demonstrates strong focus on macrophage activation, Toll-like receptor signaling, and the development of peptide-based antimicrobial solutions. He has been particularly active in studying host defense peptides as alternatives to conventional antibiotics, with applications in poultry health.
He has organized and participated in numerous international conferences, including serving as Chair for the 2019 International Meeting on Antimicrobial Peptides and as a program committee member for multiple International Meetings on Antimicrobial Peptides. His conference activities demonstrate leadership in the field of antimicrobial peptide research.
Veldhuizen maintains an active research program with significant external collaborations, as evidenced by his recent publications with international co-authors and presentations at major conferences worldwide. His work contributes to sustainable development goals related to health and responsible consumption of resources.
