University of New BrunswickAbout
Dr. David Hofmann serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton. He joined UNB in 2016 after previously holding an assistant professor position in sociology/criminology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY.
Dr. Hofmann's research spans multiple critical areas within political sociology and criminology, with particular focus on terrorism and political violence, charismatic leadership dynamics, right-wing extremism movements, apocalyptical and millenarian groups, and the structure of criminal & illicit networks. His work combines theoretical frameworks with practical analytical methods to understand complex social phenomena.
Currently, Dr. Hofmann leads two significant research projects: one examining the Canadian Freemen-on-the-Land anti-government movement, and another mapping networks of social, operational, and ideological support systems among Canadian lone-actor terrorists using advanced social network analysis techniques. These projects represent important contributions to understanding domestic security threats through sociological lenses.
Outside his academic work, Dr. Hofmann is an avid practitioner of Kendo, a Japanese martial art based on sword fighting, and has expressed interest in establishing a Kendo club at UNB to share this practice with students and colleagues.
Known for his approachable teaching style, Dr. Hofmann advises new students to actively engage with professors during office hours and class time to maximize their educational experience. His commitment to student development extends beyond the classroom through potential extracurricular activities like the proposed Kendo club.
