About
David Fiuczynski is a Professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music, where he also leads the Planet MicroJam Institute—a pioneering initiative focused on microtonal composition and the integration of global musical traditions into contemporary guitar practice.
His research and artistic work center on expanding the expressive language of the guitar through microtonality, cross-genre synthesis, and intercultural improvisation. Fiuczynski’s interests span jazz, funk, metal, classical, and world music, aiming to transcend stylistic boundaries and develop a unique musical idiom. He emphasizes analytical fluency across genres and encourages students to develop their personal voice through motif manipulation, harmonic exploration, and rhythmic innovation.
Fiuczynski is a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship (2011) and two Massachusetts Arts Council Fellowships (2009, 2017), recognizing his contributions to music composition and innovation.
As an educator and performer, he draws from decades of experience touring and recording with artists such as Meshell Ndegeocello, John Medeski, Jack DeJohnette, and Dennis Chambers. His band, Screaming Headless Torsos, is celebrated for its genre-defying sound. He has performed at major festivals across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, contributing to a global dialogue in contemporary music.
Fiuczynski leads the Planet MicroJam Institute, which serves as a creative laboratory for microtonal experimentation, performance, and pedagogy, bridging academic research with cutting-edge artistic practice.
