Bruce Saunders is a Professor at Berklee College of Music since 1993, where he teaches Jazz Guitar, improvisation, and directs specialized labs like the Odd Meter Lab. He also holds positions at the University of Texas at Austin and previously at institutions in New York and Austin. He earned an MM in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas (1986).
His research interests span Jazz pedagogy, improvisation techniques, and avant-garde approaches to guitar performance. Saunders has collaborated with renowned artists including Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Peter Erskine, and released The Bill Evans Guitar Project (2021), reimagining Bill Evans’ compositions. His teaching emphasizes rhythmic complexity and creative experimentation.
Labs and initiatives include the Kurt Rosenwinkel/Peter Bernstein Lab and Joe Henderson Ensemble. Upcoming performances include the Bruce Saunders Quintet at Monks Jazz Club in January 2025.
