Clare Hewitt

Clare Hewitt is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University of the West of England (UWE), based within the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE), and also serves as Vanley Burke's Archivist managing archival projects.

Her educational background includes:

• Law degree from Oxford Brookes University
• Commercial Photography from Arts University Bournemouth

Hewitt's research centers on loneliness, isolation, and community through photographic practice. Key projects include Everything in the forest is the forest—visualizing tree communication at Birmingham Institute of Forest Research to inspire human connection—and Kamera, an epistolary exchange with a death row prisoner incorporating landscape photography. She is pioneering sustainable creative practices at UWE, developing plant-based photographic materials like developers, papers, and inks to establish a circular, environmentally positive campus facility.

Hewitt received Arts Council England DYCP funding in 2022 to transform Everything in the forest is the forest into a sustainable photobook. Commercial clients include The New Yorker, Oxfam, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Save the Children, The Wire, and New Statesman. She is building an interdisciplinary campus space engaging students, staff, alumni, and communities in sustainable creative production through cultivated plant-based materials.
