Chad McCail

Chad McCail is a Lecturer at the University of Cumbria, based at the Brampton Road campus. He transitioned from a self-employed artist career to academia in 2023, having completed a foundation course in Carlisle in 1985. His professional background includes international exhibitions, public commissions (murals/performance art), and diverse artistic practices (paintings, installations, community projects).

He teaches art history and contemporary art modules on the Fine Art BA program, emphasizing individual/group tutorials as core to student development. His current research focuses on an installation using toy figures to address contemporary societal issues.

McCail advocates rigorous creative practice, advising students to iterate work until mastery is achieved. The Fine Art program he teaches emphasizes hand-skills, imaginative exploration, and critical engagement with societal themes.
