Cathy Holtmann is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick. She holds a PhD in Sociology and has over 25 years of teaching experience, including an online course in the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program. Her research focuses on gender and religion, family violence, and social action, with an emphasis on mixed-methods approaches.
Dr. Holtmann leads the Religion and Violence Research Team at the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research. She is a co-investigator on the GBV-MIG Canada Research Program, analyzing gender-based violence against migrants and refugees, and serves on the Expert Advisory Panel for the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability.
Her research interests include gender-based violence resilience among immigrant women, interfaith engagement through methods like photovoice, and the intersection of religion, gender, and social policy. She has published extensively on these topics, contributing to academic journals and edited volumes since 2018.
As an academic leader, Dr. Holtmann supervises undergraduate, MA, and PhD projects in sociology of religion, mixed-methods research, visual sociology, and domestic violence studies.
