Carlos Tavares

Carlos D. Tavares is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Lafayette College, where he teaches courses on Race, Racism and Health, The Social Determinants of Health, Health in Life Course Perspective, and Research Methods. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University (2018), an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame, an M.A. in Sociology from Lehigh University, and dual degrees (B.A. in Sociology and B.S. in Psychology) from Eastern Nazarene College.

His research examines how social environments impact health across the life course, focusing on racism, socioeconomic resources, and patient-provider interactions. Recent work includes analyses of discrimination trajectories in aging Black Americans, healthcare staffing disparities during the pandemic, and hypertension risks linked to employment patterns. He also investigates cultural and gender dynamics in job applications and the role of religious institutions in fostering interracial friendships.
